Coconut Value Chain
The Mekong Delta is shaped by waterways, orchards, and small enterprises that turn local crops into everyday products. This program follows the coconut value chain, helping students explore how one natural material can become food, craft products, and useful by-products.
Through factory visits, artisan workshops, and hands-on making, students investigate material change, sustainable production, and circular design. They see how local knowledge and resourceful use of materials can support livelihoods while reducing waste.
Day 1
Morning: Travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh Long, the heartland of Vietnam’s coconut industry. Settle in and get acquainted with the Mekong Delta’s waterways, orchards, and rural communities.
Afternoon: Visit the SOKFARM Coconut Nectar Factory to discover how coconut blossom nectar is collected, processed, and transformed into natural coconut sugar products. Students will also enjoy a hands-on activity, making traditional jackfruit leaf cakes with coconut milk.
Evening: Welcome dinner and program briefing.
Sample Itinerary
Day 2
Morning: Take part in a hands-on coconut-shell lantern workshop. Explore how coconut shells and coconut timber are selected, cut, shaped and polished into useful household and craft products. Students explore the characteristics of natural materials, product design and the value of reusing agricultural by-products.
Afternoon: Visit a coconut-fibre mat weaving village. Continue by boat to a traditional coconut candy workshop, where students learn about ingredients, mixtures and heating processes and take part in making coconut candy under the instruction of local experts. Afterward, change into traditional Mekong farmer- style clothing and join a lively fish-catching activity in a pond.
Day 3
Morning: Visit a brick kiln and activated-carbon production facility to investigate how coconut shells can be transformed into activated carbon. Learn about controlled heating, irreversible material change, and porosity
Afternoon: After lunch, return to Ho Chi Minh city
