Setouchi Arts & Culture  ​

This 5-day educational journey introduces students to the cultural richness and natural beauty of the Setouchi and Shikoku regions through a program of performance, craft, food, landscape, and heritage. ​Students will witness firsthand the dramatic tidal whirlpools, take part in a famous regional dance tradition, explore a historical garden, discover a longstanding pilgrimage town, journey into remote mountain scenery, and engage directly with local traditions through noodle-making and indigo dyeing for one-of-a-kind souvenirs. ​

Day 1

Morning: Fly to Osaka, Japan.​

Afternoon: Arrive in Osaka and meet your Beyond Classrooms team. Transfer to the city and check into the hotel.​

Evening: Enjoy a welcome dinner and a program orientation.​

Sample Itinerary

Day 2

Morning: Depart by private coach toward Shikoku via a scenic island crossing, entering the Setouchi region.​

Afternoon: Board a sightseeing cruise to experience the tidal whirlpools. Have lunch, then continue to a local cultural center.​

Evening: Ride a ropeway for landscape views and enjoy a regional dance performance, then join in and see who is the best amongst your group. ​ Wrap up the night with dinner and reflections.​

Day 3

Morning: Visit a historical landscape garden to witness preserved cultural landscape design.​

Afternoon: Travel to a pilgrimage town for a hands-on noodle-making experience and make your own lunch. Explore the traditional lifestyle, local shops, and shrine area.​

Evening: After dinner, return to the hotel for teambuilding games and time for reflections.​

Day 4

Morning: Board a ferry to Naoshima, Japan’s renowned island of contemporary art that blends modern art, architecture, and island scenery.​

Afternoon: Enjoy a special Shunsai Box lunch. Explore the Art House Project and surrounding museum spaces, where contemporary artwork is woven into the island’s streets and buildings. Later, return by ferry to the mainland.​

Evening: After a local dinner, work in teams for a poster-making contest inspired by the program's artwork.​

Day 5

Morning: Take part in a hands-on indigo dyeing experience to create a meaningful souvenir.​

Afternoon: Have lunch, then depart by private coach to return to Osaka.​

Evening: Enjoy a farewell dinner and final reflections to wrap up the program.​
